How to apply for social assistance.

Overview

Ontario Works helps people who are in financial need through:

Financial assistance including income to help with the costs of basic needs like food, clothing and shelter as well as health benefits for clients and their families.

Emergency assistance for people who are in a crisis or an emergency situation (such as fire, flood, impending eviction or homeless, health-related crisis, family violence or concern about safety, death in the immediate family or theft).

Am I Eligible?

Ontario Works is a social assistance program to help eligible residents of Ontario who are in financial need. To receive help from Ontario Works, you must:

  • live in Ontario
  • need money to help pay for food and housing costs
  • be willing to take part in activities that will help you find a job unless you are unable, which will be discussed with your Case Manager

Application Tips

Please be sure to have the following information available for each family member living with you:

  • Date of Birth
  • Social Insurance Number
  • Health Card Number
  • Immigration Number & Date of Landing, if applicable
  • Asset Details (i.e. Bank Account, Vehicle, Property, RRSP, etc.)
  • Accommodation costs (rent/mortgage, heat, hydro, insurance)
  • Address and Employment history (last 12 months for each)
  • Present Earnings & Income (i.e. Wages, WSIB, CPP, EI, Support)

Apply for Ontario Works

If you are 16 years of age or older you can apply online or applications can be made either in person or by calling the Telephone Application line: 705-474-1923. For other questions, please contact the nearest Ontario Works office.

The online application for Social Assistance allows residents of Ontario to find out if they might be eligible for Ontario Works and start the application process.
